New Credo Reference, Literati

Some weeks ago we introduced a new database, Credo Reference. Now it's new again-- ULM is part of a group of institutions to use the new interface.

Credo Literati

Please report any problems you encounter.

Credo can search other databases we have (such as JSTOR and EBSCOhost); this mostly works on campus but there's an off-campus access issue with it which we're looking to solve. But Credo Literati itself should work from off-campus.

RIA Tax Services Security Problem

New Database, Credo Reference

We are pleased to say that we have acquired a new reference resource, Credo Reference.

This is an encyclopedic database that finds quick information on a variety of topics. Think of it as an acceptable replacement for Wikipedia. It does much more, however. You can try it out here:

Off-campus access is likely possible, but has not yet been confirmed.

New database, MRI+

This resource isn't exactly new because the College of Business Administration has had access to this for a while, but now it's on the library website so everyone can use it.

MRI+ is a research tool providing data on advertising rates in magazines and other materials, and market research data. Its "Mediamark Reporter" can show information about the people who consume given products in a given area.

JSTOR maintenance Sept. 9-10

Next weekend, JSTOR will be up and readable, but you will not be able to save changes to your JSTOR account if you have one.

On Friday, September 9 and Saturday, September 10, JSTOR will be
performing site maintenance that requires a "read-only" period for these
two days. During this scheduled maintenance, users will be able to
search, browse, and access and download PDF files for content in JSTOR.
They will not be able to save citations, reset passwords, create or
update MyJSTOR accounts, or purchase articles.

Oxford English Dictionary (OED) is back!

We're happy to say that the online version of the Oxford English Dictionary, or OED, is now available at the library again.

NetLibrary is now EBSCOhost!

If you've been using the ULM Library for a long time, you might notice that something is different: Where is NetLibrary?

NetLibrary has passed away and become One with the EBSCOhost.

NetLibrary is not gone, but has been acquired and absorbed by EBSCOhost. So all the books that used to be in NetLibrary are now in EBSCOhost! So that's one less database to search when you're looking for books and articles.

You will also no longer need a NetLibrary account. If you had saved searches or notes in your old NetLibrary account, those are unfortunately gone. However, you can start saving new favorite books in your EBSCO "folder." You can create a new account by clicking "sign in" next to the folder icon.

We are very pleased to report that after an upgrade to our proxy server, several of our databases have become available off-campus! These are they:

Note: NetLibrary is now a part of EBSCOhost

You can now log into them using your CWID and PIN (MMYY) like the other databases. You do not need a user account to enter NetLibrary and ARTSTOR anymore, but you may still use your account to save favorite works and user preferences.

Please report any problems you encounter.

AccessScience trial

These should work off campus with your CWID and birth month and year in 4 digits (MMYY).

However, we're stilling finalizing the addition of these new databases.
If you encounter and error when you try to log in please take a screen shot of the error you see so we can see exactly what happened and attach it to an email to us at reference@ulm.edu . If you don't know how to do that, here are some instructions:

Also, the ULM Library no longer subscribes to College Source, which provides access to the course catalogs of other universities and colleges. If you needed this database, please contact us and we'll see if anything can be done.

College Source has been returned to the web pages and we have access once again!

We are also having problems with off-campus access for SciFinder, and we're trying to fix that.

ULM needs LOUIS

The ULM Library gets many of its resources with the cooperation of a library consortium called LOUIS. This provides such things as our databases, catalog, and interlibrary loan.

LOUIS has recently lost much of its funding from the state, which will have dire consequences for the near future. Here is a new library web page describing how ULM will be affected and how to help stop it:

ULM’s Tarbutton collection expands with donation of personal scrapbook and Hall of Fame trophy

By the end of her 33-year coaching career, Edna “Tiny" Tarbutton singlehandedly placed the tiny northeastern Louisiana town of Baskin on the women’s basketball map, having secured an incredible 218-game winning streak and setting national records that have yet to be broken.

Now officials at the University of Louisiana at Monroe Library Special Collections are pleased to announce that Joe Kramberg, Tarbutton’s nephew, will donate a personal scrapbook highlighting Tarbutton’s history-making coaching career, along with other personal items, including Tarbutton’s 2005 Women's Basketball Hall of Fame Trophy, to its archives. Kramberg travelled with his aunt to receive the trophy in Knoxville, Tenn., following her selection for the award.

Kramberg will present the university with the scrapbook and other items at 10 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 24, in the ULM Library Special Collections. Tarbutton died in 2009 in West Monroe at the age of 87.

“These items represent Tarbutton’s coaching victories spanning 1947 to 1953 that brought nine state titles wins, eight of them in a row,” said Cynthia Robertson, ULM’s special collections coordinator. “For the avid researcher these items really complete the Tarbutton collection we’ve already begun, and we are incredibly fortunate that Mr. Kramberg is traveling from Houston to make this significant contribution that will help tell an important story in the history of women’s basketball in Louisiana.”

Tarbutton, who attended then-Northeastern Louisiana University for two years before completing her degree at then-Normal College in Natchitoches, ended her coaching career in 1977 with a record of 654-263-2. All of her victories were at Baskin.

If the database list looks shorter recently, that's because it is. Some resources have been removed, and more may be later. Why is this happening? Because of budget cuts to LOUIS, the statewide consortium through which we get many of our databases. More detailed information about the decision can be found at the this link. Farewell to Delta

In case you did not know, Delta Community College has been housed on ULM's campus and has shared library facilities with ULM for years. But they have thier own place now and are moving to their own campus here in Monroe.

The books went out this weekend. Here's Hugh Carter, one of the reference librarians at Delta, whom you may have met at our library, with some of the books rolling out to the moving truck.

First Floor Changes

Highway 80 in Print

November 3, 2009 through December 17, 2009, Highway 80 in Print, a public exhibit and program showcasing the works of documentary photographer Lee Estes, will be held in the Special Collections Department of the University of Louisiana at Monroe Library.

Visit the exhibit page for pictures.

The kickoff program was November 3rd, 2009 at 6:00 p.m. in the Passman Room of Special Collections and the exhibit will be on display through the fall semester. Mr. Estes documented on film, the people, buildings, landscape and culture of Highway 80 in North Louisiana.

Dating Old Bottles: Fort Miro Site Artifacts

Presentation to be held October 1, 2009 at 6:00 p.m. ULM Library Special Collections Passman Room 502B.
Dr George Avery, Ph. D., RPA, Cultural Heritage Resource Coordinator, Center for Regional Heritage Research , Anthropology and Archaeology Laboratory, Stephen F. Austin State University will present a talk, Dating Old Bottles: Fort Miro Site Artifacts. The basics of dating old bottles will be presented using examples from the Fort Miro site. A handout providing simple illustrations for dating bottles will be given out. The handout will also contain a list of references and websites related to dating and identifying bottles. Visitors are encouraged to bring bottles that they wish to have dated. Archaeological interpretation of bottles will also be discussed.

November 3, 2009 through December 17, 2009, Highway 80 in Print, a public exhibit and program showcasing the works of documentary photographer Lee Estes, will be held in the Special Collections Department of the University of Louisiana at Monroe Library. The kickoff program will be November 3, 2009 at 6:00 p.m. in the Passman Room of Special Collections and the exhibit will be on display through the fall semester. Mr. Estes documented on film, the people, buildings, landscape and culture of Highway 80 in North Louisiana. This program and exhibit is being funded through an Outreach Grant by the Louisiana Endowment for the Humanities, a state affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities

Web attack that poisons Google results gets worse

The Gumblar attack has infected more than 3000 Web sites

A new attack that peppers Google search results with malicious links is spreading quickly, the U.S. Computer Emergency Readiness Team warned on Monday.

The attack, which has intensified in recent days, can be found on several thousand legitimate Web sites, according to security experts. It targets known flaws in Adobe's software and uses them to install a malicious program on victims' machines, CERT said.

The program then steals FTP login credentials from victims and uses that information to spread further. It also hijacks the victim's browser, replacing Google search results with links chosen by the attackers.

Security experts started tracking the attack in March, when it had infected several hundred Web sites, but in recent weeks the number of infected sites has jumped dramatically. The attack has been called Gumblar because at one point it used the Gumblar.cn domain, though on Monday it had switched to a different one.

Security vendor ScanSafe has counted more than 3,000 infected Web sites, up from around 800 just over a week ago.

That kind of continued growth is unusual, according to Mary Landesman, a senior security researcher with ScanSafe. Attackers have launched many widespread Web attacks over the past few years, but after a few months the total number of infected sites usually drops as Webmasters clean up their servers.

With Gumblar, more and more sites are now being infected. Landesman believes it's because Gumblar's creators have been good at obfuscating their attack code and making it harder to spot on infected sites. And because they've been stealing FTP login credentials, they've been able to use a few new tricks to get their software onto the sites. "They're doing things like changing folder permissions … and leaving behind multiple ways that they can get back into the server," she said.

Still, Web attacks have become so widespread that Gumblar remains a relatively small-scale phenomenon, according to Symantec Security Response Product Manager John Harrison. Last year, Symantec counted 18 million online attacks against its customers. With Gumblar, it has counted 10,000. "It's really just another day with drive-by downloads," he said. "There really are so many of these."

Security experts say that if you're using a fully-patched system with up-to-date security software, you should be protected from these attacks. To date, they've worked by hitting the victim with malicious PDF or Flash files.

The Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA) requires each of the nationwide consumer reporting companies — Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion — to provide you with a free copy of your credit report, at your request, once every 12 months. The FCRA promotes the accuracy and privacy of information in the files of the nation’s consumer reporting companies. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC), the nation’s consumer protection agency, enforces the FCRA with respect to consumer reporting companies.

The three nationwide consumer reporting companies have set up a central website, a toll-free telephone number, and a mailing address through which you can order your free annual report: https://www.annualcreditreport.com/cra/index.

Warning: Only one website is authorized to fill orders for the free annual credit report you are entitled to under law — annualcreditreport.com. Other websites that claim to offer “free credit reports,” “free credit scores,” or “free credit monitoring” are not part of the legally mandated free annual credit report program. In some cases, the “free” product comes with strings attached. For example, some sites sign you up for a supposedly “free” service that converts to one you have to pay for after a trial period. If you don’t cancel during the trial period, you may be unwittingly agreeing to let the company start charging fees to your credit card.

Federal Consumer Information Center Warning

"Beware!" says the Better Business Bureau (BBB). The BBB has seen a considerable spike in both complaints and inquiries from consumers who state that they received misleading mailers or high-pressure telemarketing calls claiming their auto warranty was about to expire.

“As an outgrowth of our country’s economic troubles, and to some extent problems in the auto industry, BBB is hearing from consumers nationwide who are being bombarded by telemarketers and mailers trying to scare them into thinking their auto warranty is about to expire and if they don’t sign-up now the offer expires,” said Steve Cox, BBB spokesperson. “Not only are these telemarketers lying about the consumer’s coverage, they are potentially ignoring federal laws such as the Do-Not-Call registry.”

New Web interface for SciFinder Scholar

Exciting news for anyone who uses SciFinder Scholar! The database, which was previously accessed through a local client that required downloading and installation on users' computer(s), is making the switch to a Web-based interface. This means that you will be able to access SciFinder in your Web browser of choice and will be able to log in from any computer once you create your username and password. ~~UPDATE 2/11/09: Technical difficulties are currently preventing off-campus access. We are working hard to resolve the problem and will keep you informed on the situation.~~ NEW UPDATE 2/26/09: See end of this post.

What is SciFinder?
According to its website, SciFinder is "a research discovery tool that allows you to explore the CAS databases that contain literature from many scientific disciplines, including biomedical sciences, chemistry, engineering, materials science, agricultural science, and more." For help navigating the database, try the Support & Training pages or contact me (mawilliams@ulm.edu, 342-1065).

When?
From now until April 17, 2009, you will be able to access SciFinder either through the old downloaded client or through the new Web-based version. After April 17, the desktop client will cease to work and you will need to use the Web interface.

How do I register?
If you would like to register for the SciFinder Web version, I can supply you with ULM's registration URL. The terms of our license prevent me from posting it publicly here, but if you email me at mawilliams@ulm.edu I will send it promptly. All faculty and staff in the departments of Agriculture, Biology, Chemistry, Nursing, Pharmacy, and Toxicology should shortly receive an email containing this URL from me (Maren Williams) . All ULM students, faculty, and staff are welcome to register if interested. Please note that you will need to (1) register from an on-campus computer and (2) use an @ulm.edu email address in your registration.

NEW UPDATE 2/26/09:

Thanks to Mike Magee, the Library’s Computer Services Technician, you should now be able to access the Web version of SciFinder off-campus. Mike has tirelessly negotiated between CAS’s very strict security and our state library network’s servers to make them play well together.

In order to use SciFinder off-campus, you will now need to pass through two authentications. When you try to navigate to http://scifinder.cas.org from off-campus, you will first be redirected to a LOUIS (state library network) database login page as shown here. Enter your CWID and PIN (birth month and year with two digits in each), select ULM from the drop-down box, and click Authenticate*. That should get you to the SciFinder login page, where you will enter the username and password that you chose when you registered.

*At this point you will probably get a pop-up warning mentioning an “untrusted certificate.” Your computer may not trust us, but you can—click “Ignore” to continue on to the database.

Once again, we are very sorry for this delay. If you have any more questions or continue to have problems logging in, please don’t hesitate to contact me.

Thefts in the Library

Hello everyone!

Just today, two different students who left their belongings unattended in the Library for a short time have had their textbooks stolen. We're thrilled that you feel at home here, really we are--but you should all be aware that we cannot guarantee the security of your possessions. Please keep everything of value with you at all times while you're in the building, even if you're just getting up for a minute to use the restroom or find a book on the shelves.

ULMPD officers are investigating the thefts, but they and we (the Library staff) would much prefer to prevent crime rather than deal with the aftermath. Thanks!

What is "Constitution Day"?

On September 17, 1787, the U.S. Constitution was signed by thirty-nine delegates to the Constitutional Convention. We commemorate the birthday of our country's most important document, and the courage of the founders, every year on the anniversary of the signing. As expressed by the National Constitution Center, "Now Constitution Day is a time for us to continue their legacy and develop habits of citizenship in a new generation of Americans." At ULM University Library we are marking Constitution Day 2008 with a special web page (http://www.ulm.edu/govdocs/constitution-day--2008.html), displays on the first floor of the University Library (including copies of the Constitution that you may check out), and an essay contest. (Contest winners will be recongnized at the reception in the University Library on September 25th.)

The theme of this first annual Constitution Day essay contest, open to all students at ULM, is "The Freedom to Express Yourself." For essay requirements, contact Dr. Joshua Stockley, stockley@ulm.edu, in the political science department.
